These posters were designed to aid campaigns in their efforts to promote abortion access during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has led to the postponment of non-essential medical procedures, and anti-abortion activists have coopted this moment in order to advance abortion bans-- by claiming, for example, that abortion is “inessential.” In response, abortion rights supporters often claim the opposite: Abortion IS essential medical care. These posters speak to the limits of this response.

In the immediate term, this response is understandable. But activists will do themselves a disservice in the long term by leaning too heavily on the medical necessity argument right now. Not all abortions are “medically necessary”, but they are still essential. Anti-abortion advocates will (and already are) take advantage of this argument as a contraditcion to the traditional individual choice-based rhetoric.

Approaching pandemic-era activism from the perspective of reproductive justice, working to situate reproductive rights within broader social justice movements, will do more to promote abortion access in the long term.
